With a headland curving out to sea, Vung Tau was formerly called Cap Saint Jacques by Westerners, and O Cap, or Cap for short, by people in the south of Vietnam. This beautiful and gracious land has been a source of inspiration for many poets and musicians.
Watching the sunrise in Bai Sau (Tam Duong) and the sunin Bai Truoc (Thuy Van) is one of the best things to do in this part of the world, and Vung Tau is attached closely to the hearty and simple names of Bai Truoc and Bai Sau.

Years ago, when I was a child, I often wished to go on summer holiday early so that I could swim in the sea at Vung Tau beach. Whenever I saw the sea, love for it began to rise up in my chest. I used to frolic in the water regardless of the weather.

In the past, Vung Tau did not have many restaurants. Therefore, people often prepared simple dishes such as boiled chicken and sticky rice to bring on holiday with them. Although, on entering adulthood, I came to realise that this was an economical way of feeding your family and friends, I remember that food as being truly delicious.

Vung Tau has changed a lot since I came here one year ago to re-visit its clean streets and deep blue sea, and to eat the tasty food (especially the sea food). We came to Vung Tau this visit on an early weekday, but there seemed to be as many tourists around as at the weekend or in the summer.

Vung Tau is famous for the Eastern Sea Resort in Bai Truoc, opposite the Sammy Hotel.  It has a clean beach and offers many water sports like parachuting, water-motor racing, and diving. There are many tourist attractions and architectural buildings to admire like Bach Dinh, Niet Ban Tinh Xa, the Whale Temple and the Statue of Jesus. In the near future, a cable car will be built connecting Small Mountain, Big Mountain and the busy fishing village distinguished by its colourful bustling boats.

Climbing up to the peak of Small Mountain to see the Jesus Statue is a must on a tour to Vung Tau. It is truly a work of art - a harmonious combination between the spectacular landscape and Vietnam’s modern architecture. The Statue of Jesus was built in 1972 overlooking the Eastern Sea. It has a kind-hearted face and wide-stretching arms. With the height of 32m, and an arm length of 18,4m, this is the tallest Statue of the deity in the world. It is even higher than the statue of Jesus in Brazil (26m high and 10m long arms).

After this stop, tourists should visit the Whale Tomb (the tomb represents a supernatural creature that rescues ships from violent storms at sea). This is an ancient relic found on Hoang Hoa Tham street standing under the shade of some green trees. It was built in the 19th century and displays a big whale’s bone, which was discovered by fishermen in Vung Tau over 100 years ago.

Bach Dinh (White Palace) is often mentioned when talking about Vung Tau. This is a palace of European architectural style that braces itself against the weather on the big mountain slopes with white walls and red roofs.  Bach Dinh was built by the French in the period 1898 to 1916. It used to be a holiday home for French Governor General Paul Doumer and was named Villa Blanche after his beloved daughter. Visiting Bach Dinh, you will not only come to understand its history, you will also have an opportunity to view a precious pottery collection from the Chinese Qing Dynasty, excavated from Hon Cau.

At dusk tourists can ramble along Bai Sau or go sightseeing in a cyclo along Bai Truoc to watch the sun set. For us, the most interesting thing we found to do was to drive along the beach and watch children playing, and then stop in at a café to listen to live music and sing together.

The car ran slowly along the 5km long-beach from Bai Truoc to Bai Sau. As it gets dark, Vung Tau reveals quite a spectacular beauty. Bai Truoc’s strange beauty was a surprise to us and was particularly resplendent when the lights of the car were turned off. In doing this we could fully enjoy the beauty of the sea’s rippling waves illuminated by the yellow street lights. The lights seemed to be witnesses for the lovers whispering with the sea along the shoreline. The sea breezes brought gusts of fresh fish and salt, and the beauty of the moonlight and the starry sky was that much more poignant after many rainy days. The headland was dotted full of fishing boats bobbing in the swells, and at the spur of the moment, someone announced: “How beautiful Vung Tau is! The sea seems to be singing tonight!” In my heart, the love for Vung Tau was suddenly deeply renewed, not just becaof its current beauty, but becaof my many peaceful childhood memories of staying here with my parents.
